I've read on several websites about paint quality issues in the '07 and '08 Tundras. Can anybody tell me if these are "real world" issues, or just some guys whining because they got a few chips on their new trucks?
My black '07 gets driven regularly, and I don't have any gripes about the paint yet. It cleans up great. Thanks for your input, guys!
Nick.

The paint is thin and scratches pretty easily. In my opinion Toyota came up with a new process to shoot the paint and decided that it could be a little thiner and achieve the same durability. The paint isn't bad but it isn't good enough for a $30K vehicle. Some of the trucks have it bad, others are minor (mine has a bad orange peel) while others are fine (My fathers is fine). The weird thing is that it is a chemical problem, the panels are painted by robots. Robots don't have rough weekends of partying and come in on Monday half hung over.

OR DO THEY?

BROO HA HA ha ha ha ha h a a .......

You're probably right about Toyota using a new paint process. I suppose robots are alot cheaper in the long run than UAW union employees.

And, sadly, sometimes smarter.

Do robots dream of electric sheep?

My truck is still pretty young; I have only noticed the paint issue in the bed. I slid a cardboard box across the tailgate and it left noticeable scratches. In fact, everything that has gone for a ride in the back of the truck has left its mark. I figure a spray in liner is in order, my last tundra's paint was much tougher, I am disappointed with the paint quality for sure. Don't get me wrong I love the truck I am just extra careful with this one's paint. I'm also considering a clear bra before winter starts chipping up the front end.

I have been looking at the 3M clear film.

What have you found on the 3M stuff, can we do our own installs?

Yes, You can buy rolls of the stuff and cut to fit. what I have been waiting for is a precut kit. Eventually there will be one but until then we could always cut our own. I found this company that thinks this stuff is made of enriched GOLD.

You are right about the pricing, goodness a couple hundo for the the tip of the hood? How much to spray the truck down with clear coat? :)

All trucks have that issue of scratching easy in the bed. My 03 F-150, 06 Silverado had the problem also.

I'm not too worried about the bed and even have a little damage to my tailgate from the loading ramps/motorcycles. The heavy duty bed liner was one of the first things I added b/c the dog rides in the back often and needed some grip in addition to better loading of the bikes. However, I did get some scratches on the side of the bed: 1) people think it's ok to pet loose dogs that are protecting their truck beds and she "went ape sh*t" on some people while I was in a winery, and 2) light bushes/tree branches etched a line or two. Fortunately, my truck is silver so they are not very visible but I can only imagine how upset I'd be if I had a darker colored truck. I think the paint quality is definitely less than what I have on my other Toyotas because my red 04 Highlander doesn't show as much and it's been through much more. The 02 silver Lexus shows practically no signs of scuff/abrasions. Since the Tundra is a truck I'm not as worried overall unless something major happens to the paint job in the next 2 years.
