I would like to share a disappointment with my Tundra. Toyota needs to do a recall and fix the tailgate.

I put a Tonneau Cover on my truck. Good thing Right? Thats why Toyota put that handy dandy lock on the tailgate. Right?

NOT!

I check with Toyota first and they did not offer what I was looking for. So I found a Tri-fold that would secure on the inside. That way I could use the lock that Toyota put on the tailgate. LOL!

Yea it locked just fine, to fine! The tailate would not open. Something broke on the inside. This was bad, I had just bought grocery's "cold stuff" We were 3 hours from home. The cooler was in the back. Now what was I to do? We stuffed everything by the vents and turned the AC on full blast all the way home.

I took it to Toyota and sure enough. This was not the first one they have had to fix. This is bad! I am getting ready to go on my vacation and will be flying. Would if this would of broke when I went to go get my luggage? Or broke after I had gotten home from the store?

Tundra owners, Go get the new parts installed before it is to late

I absolutely agree, Mike!
I had this happen about a month ago, and needed to destroy my new Extang Trifecta to get at the tailgate access panel.
Thank God that when I had my RhinoLiner sprayed in they removed the access cover, and sprayed it separately before re-installing it, otherwise, the dealer would have had to hack and cut-up the (thick) RhinoLiner to get the cover off.
The actuator rods and clips are quick and easy to replace, get it done before you get stuck!

Nick.

I took my truck back to the person that installed my cover. I did get lucky, he was able to get the cover apart with out destroying anything. It took awhile and yes I had to pay him, but well worth it. I am going after Toyota for my money back. I know, good luck! But an email to Toyota, an email to the dealer, and local forums will put out the word.

For what we have to pay for a Tundra, Toyotya needs to step up to the plate and make there dealers back their product.

I got my money back from Toyota (over $400 for the cover). Unfortunately, I had to raise quite a bit of hell to get it. In my situation, the Tundra was our forth new Toyota purchase from the same dealership,so I guess I had a little more leverage.
Don't let up on them. With the drop in Tundra sales, Toyota should be kissing our butts to keep us happy once the sale is made.

I never had an issue with my tailgate. I even installed a reverse camera in mine. I used Herculiner in my bed along with Extang Black Max tonneau soft cover. Sorry about what happen to you. But you can't go on about when something breaks or bad timing. It's always bad timing. You have to remember anything mechanical can break whether it's new or not. Maybe the connector wasn't fully pushed on the rod and fell off. This could have come from the factory like that. I had three issues with my truck which were all minor. Pass mirror wouldn't auto close but every 5th time. Console cover wouldn't stay close. Broke two lug nuts off the driver's rear tire. Things like that happened. It's how the dealer treats you and fixes it. 45 minutes for the mirror, 10 minutes for the replacement of the console cover, and the dealer replace the lugs and my Toyota lock set at no cost to me.

He brings his truck to Utopian Toyota of Nirvana

I bet he even gets USEFUL coupons from his dealer.

I get 15% off Front Wheel Drive Transmission service for my REAR DRIVE truck, or Free wash job with purchase of engine. You know, the reason I bought a Toyota is to avoid buying ENGINES.

I am looking for the 50% off TRD Superchargers with free install coupon.
