Thump when accelerating
15 Replies

I have a brand new 2010 Tundra. I do not have four wheel drive nor the TRD off road package. When I accelerate from a dead stop I occasionally feel and hear a thump coming from the rear end. It is…Continue

round 2

here we go I just dropped the Tundra off for the second time for the same problem. It is worse now than ever it has the clunk all the way threw all gears. Now when I put it in reverse it is absolutley rediculous. It is clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk clunk. Also now when it hits it is a no kidding jolt in the steering wheel and the gear shift as well as the audible clunk. I will let you guys know what they tell me this afternoon. I did take in the report about the TSB for the center drive shaft…See More

I had this problem and it was never solved. Good luck with this, and I believe I posted links to TSBs and such so search my posts... I agree that replacing parts won't solve the issue however. Peace.

I have brand new 2010 CrewMax 5.7 and have noticed the exact same thing after the VVT-i (spring fix). The accelerator is also now very sensitive since I got the truck back. I dropped it off at the dealership in North Texas today. We'll see what…

Tow/haul mode seems like it spaces out my shift points longer but peaks perfectly at 3000 RPM with the exception of going into 4th or 5th...it only goes to 2500 RPM. I could only get it up to 60 before I had to turn into my neighborhood LOL....I…

Correct - just use the gear shifter to get it into 6th if it's not automatically doing it for you. When I throw it in tow/haul mode, I only notice it really helps slow my engine down for braking but I'll test it out later this morning.…

When you say manually shift, do you mean switching from auto to manual to hit the 6th gear?

Your truck is still learning your driving habits but yes it does take a bit before it kicks into the next gear. Often, it may not hit 6 and you can manually shift into it then.

I have had this happen a few times with my new truck but it is really light. It is hardly noticable. The real thing that bugs me, and it might be normal, is the way this 6 speed shifts. Is it normal to wind out some before shifting. The RPM's…

There is a TSB called Thump/Clunk that deals with a similar scenario you may want your dealer to look up. It involves a quick (< 1 hour) replacement of the center drive shaft carrier bearing in 2007-2010 Tundra. I don't have it with me for…

I just got my 08 back from the dealer for what sounds like the same thing. The tech said there was a TSB for the dive shaft. They replaced the drive shaft. Crazy thing is they had to replace my radio also cause it went out and the only thing that i…

It's a known issue with the rear differential. You can take it in, they'll replace the parts, but I've been told by a service advisor that it'll keep coming back. Good luck but at least get it replaced immediately.

I had a 2008 that had the same issues but it never was something that was consistant so I did not bother to bring it in. I traded it in on a 2010 and now there are TSB's out for the VVTi check engine light and the accelerator pedal is being…

Yeah I have an appt with the dealer tomorrow. They want me to take the tech for a ride to see what it is. I am just hoping that it happens with the tech in the truck. If not when the rear end falls out of it they can replace the whole thing. the…

It could be your rear differential, but if your lucky it will only be a U-joint or something simple. I would let the dealer check it out. If they are anything like the dealers around here, you are going to have to take the tech for a ride because…
