which is the stock bumper...?? is it the steel one or the matching painted one... mine is the painted one but i kind of wished it was the steel one..it seems the painted one gets nicked up easy ,and after looking at some of the steel ones i didnt see any blemishes...So i ordered a bra and hope it covers the bumper ,got my fingers crossed..and if you have to pay more for the painted one it really doesnt make sence to me if it is so easy to nick and scratch ..

Rich,
The chrome bumper is used on the SR5, and the body-colored bumper is used on the limited model. You can always order a chrome piece from the parts counter.

Nick.
Thanks for the reply Nick .not sure about the purchase .i am kinda leaning on keeping it ,just need to see hom much will be protected from the bra i will get this week..
Put a coat of a paint sealant, not wax, under the bra and remove it at least every other week. I worked in a detail shop for over 13 years and I have NEVER seen a good outcome from a bra. Protects from bugs and rocks, yes, beats the crap out of the hood and discolors the paint, always.

The stock bumper is black plastic, SR5- chrome, Limited- Painted. and the oddball special packages mix up that combo (Painted on sr5/ chrome on limited, ect)
I think the painted is alot lighter ( better for mpg ) try a clear bra to reduce chips and you can't even see it.
3m makes a clear film that you can put on your vehicle that works at stopping chips and burns on the paint. I had a truck that I put some on and it worked VERY well. Here is a link to the PDF of the product overview.

You can also have the front of the vehicle covered with vehicle grafix. I had that done to the front of mine because I couldn't find a bra for our truck at first. In fact I emailed you to find out where you got yours. I'll post pictures so you can see. You can't tell that it's covered. It's the exact same color and lasts for 5 years (so says the manufacturer). I too have white. I even painted that gray center piece white. That's what I have covered with the grafix. I also covered the chrome mirrors and now people think that they are paited. I just had one mirror replaced by the dealership so you can see the before and after. I get pictures tomorrow.
Hmmm I wondered about that bumper thing too and thought it was the 07 vs the 08. I like the chrome better than the painted one. Too much silver on my truck as is that's why I won't chrome out the handles, mirrors, etc....black gives it contrast.

Well I agree that the bras mess up your paint job so definitely try some of the other clearcoat suggestions.
ive had no damage from the bra yet .. just removed it again for my last waxing . and there is no hint of damage or scratching even with the flimsy new paint method toyota uses. i will look into the clearcoat as soon as this bra fades from the Hot south florida sun
Keep the painted one you have because like my SR5 chromed front and rear bumpers, they are showing rust spots after 1 year and 12K mileage. Also, check your lug nuts for rust spots. I am requesting Toyota to replace both front and rear bumpers under warranty and will find out in the next 2 weeks if Toyota stands behind their vehicles. A small rock chip is better than a 1/2" rust spot and believe me, there are about 10 of them about the size of a dime or larger visible on both bumpers. Not too many rock chips that size on the paint, if any I bet. If they replace the chromed bumpers like I think they will, you can bet they admit to a problem of chroming the bumpers but Toyota will not tell you that in writing or issue a recall.
mike,
if they replace them do what i always do with a new truck. Buy a few cans of rubber coating (i use 3M from walmart @ $7 can) and cover the back side of those bumpers with it. The outside of bumpers usually hold up great but the backside with no polish and a unfinished surface is quick to rust. Make sure its clean when you do it and i do the WHOLE under-carriage as well for about $50, Toyota wanted like $300 to do a half-a#% job. little messy to apply but, when done right long term protection and sound benefits are awesome!!!
It is actually the outside of the chrome that is showing rust spots on the chrome. It is not on the backside rusting thru to the chrome. I know rust is going to happen, but not at 12K into 20K like I have now and in 1-2 years. Even if I did not wax the truck like I do twice, maybe 3 times really good per year, rust spots should not happen until over 40K and 3 years even in WI.
